DeWalt DC9096 Review

Power tools may come with a nickel-cadmium battery (NiCd), a nickel-metal hydride battery (NiMH), or a Lithium-ion battery (Li-ion). Each type will have its pros and cons, some are more powerful while others last longer. Battery power is measured in ampere-hour. The general rule is the higher the Ah the better.

DeWalt DC9096

It has the power of 2.4Ah. The battery is NiCD. It is tough and has a long life-cycle. NiCD batteries benefit from being completely discharged before recharging. They put out more power than other types of batteries, but they are the heaviest.

DeWalt DC9099

The power is slightly higher at 3.0Ah. It is a NiMH battery, so it is lighter. Enermall states that it can be charged or discharged as needed without affecting its capacity. They will normally last for longer than a NiCD battery. This XRP battery has a high capacity and will run for 40% longer than standard batteries thanks to the new cobalt technology.

Pros and Cons

Before we take a look at the final verdict, we will go over some pros and cons of the DC9096 and the DC9099 battery replacements.

DeWalt DC9096

DeWalt DC9096 Comparison

Pros:

  • It has an excellent battery function, it’s like giving an older tool a new life
  • As it is an original, it fits into your DeWalt tools like a glove
  • They are very durable and well-built

Cons:

  • It is more expensive, that being said, it’s relatively cheap for a DeWalt product

DeWalt DC9099

DeWalt DC9099

Pros:

  • It’s unlikely that you will find a better deal for a pack of two replacement batteries, with a warranty
  • The battery life lasted as long as the original replacement
  • Excellent customer service
  • It’s great that you can leave them for a few months without use and the charge isn’t affected

Cons:

  • While it fits onto all the DeWalt tools, it is tricky to remove and may need a little help with a screwdriver.

The Final Verdict

It is not often there is such a clear winner, but today it is definitely the DeWalt DC9099. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the DeWalt DC9096, but we just haven’t found the necessity for spending out on an original replacement when the Enermall 2-pack does such a good job.

We looked hard to find fault in the DeWalt DC9096, but aside from the slight difficulty removing it, it’s a brilliant replacement. Having to fiddle with it to remove it is certainly not enough to put you off buying them.

We thought there would be a significant difference in the power of the battery. The DeWalt DC9096 was advertised as having 40% more capacity.

On the contrary, with the slightly higher Ah, we noticed the use was a little superior to the original. Having two in a pack means you will always be able to have at least one charged up and ready to go. It’s quite useful not having to completely discharge your battery to recharge it.

Finally, it helps that the DeWalt DC9099 weighs just 1.5lbs, at almost a pound less than the DeWalt DC9096, this battery will not add excess weight to your tools, keeping them easy to use.
