Appearance

WD My Passport Comparison

Hard drives generally look very similar, a small box with USB ports. Colors will depend on the brand, however, most are black.

WD My Passport

The first great thing about this portable hard drive is that it comes in three different colors, black, blue, and red. It means that if this is going to be your second hard drive, you will be able to easily distinguish the two. Half is smooth and the other half has small ridges. It is 4.22 x 2.95 x 0.75, so small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It weighs 7.4 ounces.

WD Easystore

This is black with a smooth matte finish. The brand name and version are clearly marked with a shiny finish. It is 5.5 x 4.8 x 1.6 inches. As it’s a bit larger, it’s also heavier, weighing 8.2 ounces.

WD Easystore review

Pros and Cons

Considering how similar the two hard drives are, the following pros and cons will help you with your buying decision.

WD My Passport

WD My Passport

Pros:

  • It has a good, solid construction and feels quite durable
  • It’s really easy to use, it’s advertised as plug and play and it’s true
  • The password protect is a great feature that is straightforward to set up

Cons:

  • The WD Discovery software isn’t up to the same standards as the hard drive itself

WD Easystore

WD Easystore

Pros:

  • It’s a good option for gamers, particularly the Xbox and PlayStation
  • The connectivity is reliable, you won’t have issues with the device not being found
  • It has a great upload and download read write speed

Cons:

  • It’s not so easy to use, it would be nice if it came with some instructions, or that the WD website offered more information.

The Final Verdict

There are two factors that we feel determine the buying decision. First of all, if you have a Mac, it’s a no brainer, you are going to have to choose the WD Easystore. If you are saving any type of personal information (medical documents, financial papers, contracts) or you are concerned about security, you will need the WD My Passport to take advantage of the password protection and hardware encryption.

There is one inconvenient thing about both the WD My Passport and the WD Easystore hard drive, and that is the UBS cable. It is too short and this can make it awkward at times. That being said, it’s an easy problem to solve. As they both work with a 2.0 and 3.0 USB port connection, this didn’t affect our decision.

Overall, we felt that the WD My Passport is the better option and there were several reasons for this. First, we liked the appearance, it was compact and lightweight. While the black version is more professional, the colors are fun and do help distinguish it from others. The second reason is that the password protection really is a must nowadays. If you don’t have this and happen to lose it, you run the risk of someone else having access to your entire digital life.

In reality, both the WD My Passport and the WD Easystore are fantastic hard drives with tonnes of space and very reasonable prices. You won’t go wrong with either, but today, the WD My passport had the advantage.
